Ingredients:
- ½ cup water
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1 tablespoon honey
- ½ teaspoon ginger powder
- ¼ teaspoon powdered cloves
Method of preparation
Start by placing a pan on the hob, fill it with ½ cup of water. Next, take a lemon, cut it in half, and add 1 tablespoon of the lemon juice in the pan. Lemon juice is a rich source of vitamin C. Then, add a tablespoon of honey.
Honey is an antibacterial, and it helps to soothe the sore throat and it is a natural cough suppressant. If possible, use Manuka honey.
Next, add ½ teaspoon of ground ginger, it helps to maintain the immune system, it has anti- inflamatory properties and it also helps with pain relief and in nausea. Finally, add ¼ teaspoon of ground cloves. If you haven’t got ground ones, you can take dried ones and crush them yourself.
Except being able to reduce phlegm, they have anti- septic properties and are packed with antioxidants. Next, turn on the heat and give it a good stir. When the mixture starts to simmer, stir again and put it n a low heat. Leave it simmering for 15- 20 minutes. Make sure to stir it regularly.
While waiting, take out a baking tray and line it with baking paper. After 15- 20 minutes, take the pan off the heat and let it cool down for a few minutes. It should now be thick dark syrup. Then it is ready to pour it over the baking paper and make little sweets. Use a spoon and be careful not to burn yourself, because it is very hot.
When you are done, let it cool down for twenty minutes, and cover them with a dusting of powdered icing sugar to stop them sticking together. Take them off the paper and make sure they are all well coated. And then you have the homemade natural cough sweets.
If you like, take a metal tin or box, line it with baking paper, and fill it with your sough sweets. They taste great and they really help. And you can even add a couple in a cup of hot water, let them dissolve and take it as a drink.
